Hackensack, NJ USA The myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a heterogeneous group of clonal hematopoietic
stem cell disorders, characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis leading to peripheral
cytopenias and possible future leukemia. Although chronic red blood cell transfusions resulting in iron overload are
common among patients with MDS, the ciinical implications and value of iron
chelation therapy in MDS, remain unclear.
